1974 was a very interesting year for Master Lay Wing Sung, as a young Chinese man arrived in town and wanted to open a martial arts school. He had heard of Master Lay’s school and reputation, and thought it would be a good idea to visit and introduce himself. He felt that he could avoid any conflict and misunderstanding before he proceeded with his own plans.
The young man claimed to be a “master” of many different Kung Fu styles, among them the White Crane, Tong Long, and even Bruce Lee style. Master Lay was neither impressed with the man’s credentials or his arrogance, but since he had come on a courtesy visit, he returned the courtesy.
Two years later, Master Lay began hearing rumors that this young, so called “master”, was making defamatory remarks about him and Choy Lay Fut saying that it was all “bullshit!” When Master Lay heard this, he gathered a couple of students and his brother, and headed out to pay this arrogant young “master” an evening visit!
The group, lead by Master Lay, arrived at a church hall where the young man was conducting his Kung Fu classes. Standing in the entrance doorway, Master Lay could see the young “master” and seven or eight students, about sixty feet away. When the young man spotted Master Lay and his group, he turned pale and knew this was no “social” visit!
Master Lay motioned with his head for him to come over, but the young man was too scared. Master Lay shouted, “So, you’ve been talking shit about me and Choy Lay Fut? Let’s see how good your Kung Fu really is!” The young “master” froze on the spot and would not come forward. Instead, he turned to his students and said, “Students, did I ever say anything bad about the brothers? Raise your hands!” Everyone was silent and no one moved.
At this point, Master Lay called out, “What’s this bloody style you teach, Hap-Kune-Do? It’s all bullshit! Who is your bloody master? I want to challenge him!” At this, the young man started to run towards a table about fifty feet away and reached into a bag sitting there. Master Lay’s brother then shouted, “Yeah, go get you bloody Nun-Chukkas!” At this point, the young “master” stopped in fear for his life.
Master Lay continued to should and curse at him, and he hid behind one of this students for protection. The young man quietly told one of his students to call for the landlord and the police. For the second time, he addressed his students, “Students, did I ever talk bad about the brothers? Raise your hands!” Again, no one made a move.
Master Lay again shouted at the young man, “You think I’m bloody stupid? As if any of your students would dare tell on you!” Master Lay then said to the man, “Come on, and let’s see your Hap-Kune-Do!” The frightened young man then commented, “I would fight you, but not here. I need to see my lawyer first, in case someone gets hurt.” The young man then asked Master Lay at what time would he be at his school the next day, so he could bring his lawyer along. Master Lay told him to be at his school at five in the afternoon, and that he would be waiting for the young man and his lawyer.
The so called “master” never showed up at Master Lay’s school for the appointment, and left town soon after the incident! As an ironic side note, the young man was featured in the “Real Kung Fu” magazine about five years later and was called the “Ferocious Tiger” in the article.
